What Makes the V6 And Ecoboost Similar in Different Ways?
As you know by now, the 2.3L Ecoboost and the 3.7L V6 has some similar power numbers. But the operational mechanisms of both are pretty different. The V6 is generally aspirated, and the latter one is usually turbocharged. And a turbocharged engine will make a lot of power in different ways during the operational phase.
Well, most of the things are going to depend on the exhaust flow. When the RPM rises up, the exhaust flow will increase. As a result, the spools of the turbo will generally rise quickly. However, when the RPM is low, the exhaust flow will be less. That will dictate in lower pounds of boost or less spool.
On that note, this lower range of spool or pounds of boost during the lower number of RPM is generally known as turbo lag. But the factory turbo of these engines will be reasonably low. They do this to increase the overall efficiency at the RPM range of 2000 to 4000.
So, the turbo will spool quickly but will run out of steam in higher RPM. For this reason, some of the Ecoboost engines are going to fall short in terms of maintaining a higher amount of boost in the higher RPM numbers.
That being said, the operational method of the aspirated motor is pretty simple in nature. As there is not that much force inducted, there will be less interruption in terms of airflow. So, the chances of turbo lag occurring will be reasonably low too. That is why the torque curve is reasonably smooth.
The Difference in the Mid Range
The most significant difference that lies between the two engines is in the mid-range. 2.3L EcoBoost will generally have a shelf beginning, which is at 2000 RPM. It will be carrying that stage all the way up to 5000 RPM. But the six-cylinder motor will usually have a flat and steady torque curve.
But what does that mean? Well, the torque is basically what you are going to feel when you accelerate the vehicle. Because of the quick wall nature of the low-end toge of the Ecoboost, you will be able to notice that torque pretty easily. But the V6 will be reasonably steady and offer a smooth overall acceleration.
Talking of which, turbocharged motors are generally different than naturally aspirated engines. They will spend most of the time in the mid-range. That is why they are highly capable of offering a smooth overall driving experience.

There are plenty of options in the case of aftermarket support. However, most of the things starting from blow of valves to cold air intakes, exhaust, wastegates, and exhausts are available for the EcoBoost. There are certainly not as many options available for the V6. So, you would be pretty much limited with what you have.
However, if you know where to look, you will surely find plenty of different aftermarket parts for the V6. But the thing is, they will not be that much accessible like the EcoBoost. So, if aftermarket support is a thing you care about, our recommendation would be to stick with the Ecoboost.
